How to: Kickflip

Now that you have learned how to ollie, it is time to move on to the harder stuff. Here's a little history about Kickflip, The Kickflip (originally Magic Flip) is an Aerial Skateboarding Trick where the Skateboarder kicks his Skateboard in order to make it flip 360 degrees along the board's long axis. The modern Kickflip was invented by Rodney Mullen in 1983

Modern Kickflip

There was a different skateboard trick also named 'kickflip' that was common in 1970s freestyle skateboarding. The skater would stand on a motionless or slow moving skateboard with two feet side by side, facing forward in the center of the board. One foot was then placed slightly under one side of the board, and the skater would jump up in the air, lifting the board with the toe of the foot. The board would spin and land back on its wheels, and the skater would land back on the board. Several variations were created by freestyle skateboarder Kurt 'Mr. Kickflip' Lindgren, a member of the California Free Formerteam. This trick is also known as the oldschool kickflip among most skaters today

AST Dew Tour

It's the end of an era for back-to-back-to-back Dew Cup champ Ryan Sheckler. After winning the PlayStation® Pro Skate Park Finals to seal the deal, 14 year-old rookie Chaz Ortis. is the new sheriff in town.
"It's been ridiculous," says Ortiz. "Last year I took 6th in this contest as the Free FLow Tour champ and now I'm the Dew Cup champ. It's unreal. I wasn't expecting it, but I'm psyched."
Ortiz was just 8 points behind Sheckler in the overall standings heading into Orlando for the fifth and final stop of the 2008 AST Dew Tour, after claiming his first win last week in Salt Lake City at the Toyota Challenge. Ortiz occupied every step of the Dew Tour podium this year, and came out big in Orlando.
He took a commanding lead in Run 1, with a nearly flawless run featuring a frontside bluntslide, a kickflip to backside tailslide, and a switch backside lipslide. After Run 1, it was Ortiz in 1st, followed by Greg Lutzka, Paul Rodriguez, Austen Seaholm, Danilo do Rosario, and defending champ Ryan Sheckler.
Ortiz put it together again in Run 2 to secure a huge lead, posting a score of 92.75 that put him way ahead of P-Rod and the rest of the field. The top 6 skaters advanced to a free-for-all jam session to battle it out. In a huge surprise and tremendous upset, Sheckler didn't make the cut, finishing in unfamilar territory down in 10th place. An even bigger surprise: 2008 Free Flow Tour champ Timmy Knuth did make the cut, tracing Ortiz' path to Dew Tour fame. Also in the mix: Greg Lutzka, Austen Seaholm and Carlos De Andrade.
P-Rod actually won the jam session with hugely technical tricks like a switch kickflip to boardslide and a switch 360 kickflip, but it wasn't enough to close the massive lead Ortiz established with his 2nd run. Ortiz held on in the jam session with a switch backside lipslide, his signature kickflip boardslide to kickflip out, and other big tricks.
Final score? Ortiz on top with 92.75, P-Rod in 2nd with 91.25, and Lutzka in 3rd with 86.75.
The win put Ortiz' overall points total to 430, ahead of P-Rod's 408 and Sheckler's 387 to make him the youngest Dew Cup champ in the history of the AST Dew Tour.
"I'm going to be out here trying to take it home again next year," says Ortiz, now a 9th grader in his hometown of Chicago. "But first things first: I have to go back to school on Wednesday."

Etnies 5th Annual GvR Skate Contest

THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE STANCES CONTINUES WITH ETNIES’ FIFTH ANNUAL GvR SKATE CONTEST

Pro Skateboarders Are 2 for 2 as They Approach Landmark Year in the
    Goofy vs. Regular Rivalry

Lake Forest, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2008) – Goofy or Regular? The debate between the right and left continues with etnies’ fifth annual GvR skateboarding contest taking place October 2-5, 2008 at the etnies Skatepark in Lake Forest, Calif. Started in 2004, GvR is the first and only team-oriented skateboarding contest in which Goofy-footed and Regular-footed skaters compete in an action-packed weekend of non-stop skating.

This year, many of the world’s best skateboarders, including Ryan Sheckler, Jereme Rogers and Chris Cole, will compete in the tie-breaking forum before a crowd of more than 15,000. Past competitors include Andrew Reynolds, Billy Marks, Nyjah Huston, Rick McCrank and Sean Malto. The event will be held at etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest, a 40,000 square foot concrete haven boasting a street section, pools, music and free admission.

Each team captain will pre-qualify five skaters who will go straight to the final GvR competition. Saturday’s events will consist of qualifying rounds for the rest of the skaters from each team while Sunday will feature the final conflict of the stances after which the winning team will be announced settling the score once and for all…or at least until next year’s competition.

Team Captain SLAP Magazine’s Mark Whiteley put together the following crew of heavy hitters for the Regular Team’s starting five:
    - Ryan Sheckler
    - Andrew Reynolds
    - Chris Cole
    - Rick McCrank
    - Sean Malto

Goofy Team Captain and Skateboard Mag Editor-in-Chief Dave Swift is being elusive about his selection for his starting five skateboarders. Will Swift’s strategy of keeping his team roster secret as long as possible pay off with a win for Team Goofy?

Admission to GvR is free of charge and in addition to all-day skating, this year’s festivities include legendary punk rock band Bad Religion taking the stage with a special performance Saturday, October 5, 2008 at 8:00pm. Tickets to the Bad Religion concert are available at select etnies retailers throughout Southern California and while the performance is free, tickets are required for all admissions.

Everyone who attends GvR can also enjoy the Festival Village area which is open for the duration of the competition, and has something to do for everyone. Fans can enjoy food, activities and exhibits from sponsors including Grind for Life, Oakley, Keep-A-Breast, FUEL TV and more.

For the first time ever, gamers can compete in etnies’ GvR competition in Skate 2, being released for the PlayStation® 3 system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system in 2009. Developed by Black Box, a studio of Electronic Arts (EA), Skate 2 delivers all the grit, creativity and culture of skateboarding. EA Skate 2 doubles the bag of tricks and allows gamers to get off their board and move objects to create and share their ultimate skate spots.
